This involves the removal of the pulp/nerve of a tooth followed by cleaning and filling the canal system to prevent infection. The tooth is now dead and in some circumstances a crown will be recommended to protect the tooth.
If your root canal is complex a specialist referral may be recommended.
Root canal treatment may be necessary as a result of;
- deep dental decay
- failure of a tooth to settle following a deep filling
- dental trauma
- orthodontic movement of a tooth
- a cracked tooth
- A heavily restored tooth
The alternative to root canal is normally extraction of the tooth.
